Su Myat Thwe

Partnerships and Research Coordinator (Fellow)

Su Myat Thwe leads the RSRI’s outreach activities in Southeast Asia as the RSRI’s Partnerships and Research Coordinator, a fellowship role supported by the Refugee-Led Research Hub (RLRH).

Su is a PhD candidate in Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Cologne and a visiting scientist at the Global South Studies Center. She holds an MA in International Development Studies from Chulalongkorn University, where she is also a visiting researcher at the Faculty of Political Science.

Trained as a lawyer in Myanmar, Su holds degrees in law and business administration and has professional experience in corporate communications and social responsibility. Her academic work focuses on displacement and refugee studies, marginalization and access to justice, and humanitarianism and educational equity in conflict settings. Her current doctoral research explores resilience and agency among displaced Myanmar youth in Thailand, with a focus on education in the borderlands. As a researcher from the community under study, Su’s work adopts an intersectional, ethnographic approach that engages with legal protection and advocacy.

Before joining the RSRI in April 2026, Su worked as a graduate researcher on projects examining the socio-economic integration of migrants and refugees along the Thailand–Myanmar border. She also previously engaged in policy and practitioner-oriented initiatives related to displacement and humanitarian response in the region, including collaborations with civil society organizations supporting migrant workers, refugees, and asylum seekers.

Her publications span academic, policy, and public-facing platforms and include commentaries and op-eds for outlets such as the Lieber Institute at West Point, ISEAS–Yusof Ishak Institute, and Nikkei Asia.

Su lives alternately between Germany and Thailand and is currently based in Mae Sot, Thailand.
